Eliminate complexity, narrow the search
The following current scanning technology produces broader, overlapping results that do not discern between benign, contraband and threat materials.
Standard scanning machines cannot reliably discriminate a bottle of alcohol from a cohort of water bottles (two essentially benign materials having Zeff within 0.5 of each other).
Dual energy – all bottles look the same, as all are detected as organic material with Zeff less than 10. Zeff precision is at best +/- 1. The threat detection capability is unreliable, resulting in high false alarm rates (FAR).
In (single energy) CT, all the bottles look the same. There is no Zeff information, just volumetric shapes. Image processing can identify bottle shapes, but presents no idea of what is inside.
Combined with the DE adds Zeff +/-1 to volumetric shape data. This has the same discrimination limitation as DE alone.
LXS offers Zeff precision +/-0.1, therefore allowing easy target detection from water and other aqueous mixes.
LXS Zeff +/-0.1 added to CT data. Achieves best performance, especially effective in cluttered scenarios.
